Sheree Dukes Conrad is an assistant professor of social psychology at the University of Massachusetts at Boston. She received the B.A. in Psychology from Wesleyan University and the Ph.D. in Personality Psychology from Boston University. She is the author, with Michael Milburn, of The Politics of Denial (MIT Press, 1996), based on their research on the link between childhood punishment and adult political and social attitudes, for example, on abortion. With Michael Milburn, she won the Alfred M. Freedman Award from the International Society of Political Psychology for that research.

Dr. Conrad has published professional articles on her research in a number of areas, including the long-term cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal effects of childhood sexual and physical abuse, the causes of domestic violence, the effect of the media on support for the death penalty, and the personality of creative artists. Her research on the effects of childhood abuse has shown that images of violence in the news maintain and even exacerbate the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and increase the likelihood that men will batter their partners.

She is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the International Society of Political Psychology and the International Society for the Study of Dissociation. She has published not only in this country but also in Germany.
